Treatment Principles in Ayurveda
The treatment of disease can broadly be classified as
- Shodhana therapy (Purification Treatment)
- Shamana therapy (Palliative Treatment)
- Pathya Vyavastha (Prescription of diet and activity)
- Nidan Parivarjan (Avoidance of disease causing and aggravating factors)
- Satvavajaya(Psychotherapy)
- Rasayana therapy(use of immunomodulators and rejuvenation medicines)
Purification Therapy (Shodhana) is treatment and eradication or elimination of a disease from the body. The vitiated doshas are removed from the body thus curing or preventing the disease from recurring. It is not about treating diseased organs or tissue but rather about managing doshas, the biological forces which carry toxins back and forth between the digestive tract and the deeper body tissue.
Palliative Therapy (Shamana) is a treatment which alleviates the vitiated dosha, thus temporarily preventing the disease. It makes the patient feel better by suppressing the effects of the body's accumulates toxins. This method does not deal with the root cause of the illness and therefore can never effect a complete cure. This method is helpful if it includes lifestyle changes and changes to diet but once the systems immunity drops it is likely that the illness will reappear.
One therapy pacifies while the other removes the disease permanently from the body.
Palliative therapy is like a gardener cutting off a weed where it pops out of the ground, which can easily grow back because the root
of the weed is left intact in the ground. Purification therapy removes the weed above the ground including the root so it will no longer grow.
A comprehensive treatment in Ayurveda uses both the above types of treatment.
Diet and Activity (Pathya Vyavastha) comprises indications and contraindications in respect of diet, activity, habits and emotional status. This is done with a view to enhance the effects of therapeutic measures and to impede the pathogenetic processes. Emphasis ondo's and don'ts of diet etc is applied with the aim to stimulate Agni and optimize digestion and assimilation of food in order to ensure strength of tissues.
Nidan Parivarjan is to avoid the known disease causing factors in the diet and lifestyle of the patient. It also encompasses the idea of refraining from precipitating or aggravating factors of the disease.
Satvavajaya is concerned mainly with the area of mental disturbances. This includes restraining the mind from desires for unwholesome objects and cultivation of courage, memory and concentration. The study of psychology and psychiatry have been developed extensively in Ayurveda and have a wide range of approaches in the treatment of mental disorders.
